2015 Shaka Smart Basketball Camps at VCU

Make friends! Have fun! Get fit!

Open to any and all entrants.

Founded in April of 2009, Shaka Smart Basketball Camps LLC is celebrating its seventh camp season by planning its best camps yet! Our day camps provide a fun, safe environment for boys and girls entering grades three through 12 to improve their basketball skills, make new friends and get fit.

Our coaching staff will provide instruction for all levels of players, grounding them in the fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding and defense. We also strive to equip players with the necessary knowledge and skills to compete at their current level and advance to the next one. Beyond basketball, we emphasize the vital life skills of teamwork and sportsmanship. We are excited to see you next summer at the Siegel Center!  Scroll to the end of the page for more camp details.

What Parents Say

As a diabetes education nurse, I APPLAUD your efforts and initiative to make lunches for the campers healthier. Childhood obesity is rising at an epidemic rate, which, in turn, causes many problems in adulthood such as diabetes and heart disease. Thank you for taking a leadership role by not only mentoring our children through sport, exercise, play, and sportsmanship but also showing them that making healthier food choices will improve their overall health and well-being. Thank you for inspiring families to get on the path to wellness. For this and a thousand other reasons, I am so happy that my son, Matthew, will be attending camp this year.”

- Heather S., R.N

“I cannot tell you what a great experience Shaka Smart Basketball Camp was for my son and for my husband and I. We all loved it. The camp was so well organized and run. I feel terrible that I have forgotten the young man’s name who directed the camp, but he did a superior job. All of the coaches and players who coached and instructed the campers were knowledgeable, positive, upbeat and FUN!!! It seemed that they were having more fun than the kids! The campers were quickly organized every morning and put into action almost immediately. Every good teacher and coach knows that players only get better if they have a ball in their hands and are practicing skills. It’s called “time on task” and the campers got plenty of it. The station work was excellent and always evolving giving players a chance to show off skills they already had or learn something new and practice a skill they may normally neglect. The instructional environment of these stations was very beneficial. The games and contests were very exciting and provided excellent game play experience. I liked that there were referees for each game and teams were composed of the right number of players for ultimate floor time. Lunch was reported to be good and the photo, basketball, bag, shirt and other goodies were icing on the cake. Loved the campwear too!! All staff involved with the camp were helpful, polite and smiling at all times. A tornado warning went into effect one day during our week and the staff handled it beautifully. I can’t think of anything I would change and offer no advice for improvement. My husband and I are both PE teachers and have coached a variety of sports for many years. My husband has played major league baseball. We have spent many years working at and watching sports camps and we both agree that Shaka Smart camp receives an A+! I feel it is the best camp value for the unbelievably low fee. We can’t wait to come back next summer!! “

“I am writing to express how happy my son and I were with the Shaka Smart basketball camp last week. My son attended last year, and I had some concerns which I communicated to you. I am so pleased that all of those concerns were addressed and greatly improved during camp this year. I really appreciate that you all listened to the feedback and worked to improve the camp experience for these boys. You all have a great camp, and my son can’t wait to attend again next year. Congratulations on a job well done!”

- Vicki H

“My son’s underdog team won the championship last night, 22-19. He played so well—9 points, 3 blocks, 5 steals. I asked him how he learned to play like that and he said from Shaka’s camp!”
