The first day of Shaka Smart Basketball Camp is awesome!

After your parent or guardian has registered you it’s time for some fun. You’ll come down the bleachers to the main court of the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. There, you’ll meet your coach and teammates. Each coach will have 10 campers in his crew, so it will be pretty easy for you to get to know your team.

Next, VCU’s Head Basketball Coach Shaka Smart and the camp’s Head of Basketball Operations Jesse Bopp and will welcome you to Richmond’s top basketball camp! (Because of USA Basketball obligations, Coach Smart will miss Session 1). This morning pep talk will get you fired up and ready to play some basketball.

Then teams will separate for some stretching. Afterwards you’ll begin working on basketball drills and fundamentals, which we call “stations” at camp—so be prepared to dribble, shoot, run and work on your defensive stance. Afterwards, the teams usually have some individual competitions such as free throw contests. Is your form on point?

After all that playing, we know you’ll be eager for our healthy delicious lunch, which is sponsored by Health Diagnostic Laboratory. Lunch is served with water that is bottled nearby by Hanover-based Virginia Artesian Water—this water is a perfect fit for a Virginia basketball camp. Don’t worry, if you are thirsty before lunch, there are water fountains in the gyms and if you have money on your camp bank account at the Camp Store, you can buy drinks and snacks there during your breaks.

Usually, there is a guest speaker after lunch, followed by more basketball contests and games. Whew!

By the time you’re picked up at 5 p.m., you should be exhausted! Get a good night sleep, because the next day, we’re at it again!
